Coppicing Workshop

Enjoy a day out in the ancient hazel woods of Dartmoor and learn all about the traditional art of coppicing on one of our one-day workshops on Saturdays in November (22nd and 29th) and December (6th and 13th) with the Sustainable Coppice Partnership. Open to everyone, the workshops are designed to appeal to complete beginners as well as people with some experience. You will get a practical introduction to coppicing and learn how to grow, harvest and prepare coppice polewood for making into a myriad of traditional greenwood products. The workshops are a great opportunity to test your tree identification skills, meet a bunch of like-minded people and to learn more about woodland management for people and wildlife. You will have a chance to harvest hazel rods and try your hand at making some traditional products. These were made by the skilled woodsmen of Devon for hundreds of years, before the Second World War and cheap imports took their toll on the people who made their living by these traditional rural crafts.

Leat clearance - volunteer task

This is an annual event which encourages volunteers to help maintain the important leat which supplies the working Finch Foundry(owned and run by the National Trust) with the water to drive the wheels and machinary. Vegetation needs to be carefully cut back and some debris removed. Welly boots are a must and definitley old cloths to be worn! Tools etc will be provided as well as lunch.

Your Dartmoor - your business

Dartmoor businessmen and women are invited to join Dartmoor National Park at a meeting on 3 December 2014 to explore new opportunities for business development in the area. The evening will include a presentation, giving up to date information on the Greater Dartmoor LEAF (local enterprise action fund) and how it can help business growth. There will also be an ‘ask the planner’ session, giving an opportunity for business people to pose questions to Dartmoor planners and gain a greater understanding of how the planning system works. All questions must be submitted in advance and will be selected to highlight the key issues being raised. Any questions submitted, but not discussed on the night, will receive a written response. Please email your questions to economy@dartmoor.gov.uk no later than Sunday 30 November. The meeting will be held at the National Park headquarters, Parke, Bovey Tracey. A light buffet will be available from 6.30 pm and the event will start at 7 pm. The meeting will last no more than two hours and is open to all. Our Christmas Community Market has a wide variety of stalls selling traditional and modern handmade crafts, locally made jams, jewellery, pretty gifts, framed prints, local meat and vegetables ……...and all right on your doorstep! Come along and choose your Christmas presents and treats in a lovely festive atmosphere. There will also be a Christmas raffle and Christmas music as well as mince pies and mulled wine. If you purchase something from Ilsington Village Shop in the two weeks before the market, remember to ask for your Community Loyalty Raffle Ticket. Hand it to any stall holder at the Christmas Market (excluding the café) when you buy something, and you will be entered into a FREE Christmas raffle (drawn at the market) with a chance to win a shop voucher or a bottle of fizz! As usual the café offers a great place to catch up with friends and neighbours and enjoy delicious turkey baps, mince pies and hot drinks. Wildlife Hit Squad Wednesday Group

Habitat conservation volunteer tasks on Devon Wildlife Trust’s Bovey Heathfield Reserve and other sites across eastern Dartmoor. Tasks vary from month to month but will include lowland heath and woodland habitat management plus habitat conservation for threatened fritillary butterflies and opportunities for species identification.
