Access to the Countryside

On foot

Dartmoor has over 47,000 hectares of open countryside and 450 miles (730 km) of public rights of way for you to explore and enjoy.  The landscape includes the high upland areas, of the north and southern moors, steep sided river valleys and ancient woodlands.  On the open moor you are free to choose your own walking route and there is no need to keep to footpaths.   You should only cross over walls or fences where there are properly constructed stiles or gates .  The Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Outdoor Leisure map is recommended for walkers and is available from our online shop.

By bike

There are many opportunities for cyclists on designated cycle tracks, byways and bridleways. However cyclists are not permitted to ride on the open moor.  A comprehensive cycle map showing a variety of trails is available from our online shop
