How to Apply for a Temporary Closure of a Right of Way (Traffic Regulation Order)

Public rights of way are legally protected and cannot be closed without a legal process involving making an Order.  It is possible to temporarily close a right of way by means of a Traffic Regulation Order under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Act (1984).  Landowners or other parties may apply for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order, for example whilst dangerous works are being carried out close to the right of way. An application must be made at least 8 weeks before the closure is required. Further information and an application form are available to download.
