The High Dartmoor Sector covers much of the high open moorland common, most of which is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. It can be a wild and rugged area, but with its own beauty. The Sector also includes some in bye farmland and large newtakes, and the catchment for Fernworthy Reservoir. The great rivers Dart, Okement, Tavy, Taw and Teign all rise in the expanse of blanket bog to be found on the high moor. The central massif contains the military training area, where live firing is carried out on pre-arranged dates outside of the peak holiday periods.
