Bovey Tracey Town Charter Celebrations
Charcoal demonstration weekend Saturday 3rd July and Sunday 4th July
Discover traditional charcoal making at Yarner Wood this weekend and see what is actually involved in this industry and how it would have shaped the landscape and wildlife. Follow the family friendly Woodcutters trail, discover your inner artist and draw with charcoal made on site. Lighting will take place at 11:30 on Saturday 3rd July and the traditional hearth will burn all weekend in the hope we can reveal the charcoal Sunday afternoon. Yarner Wood is open from 8:30 am to 7 pm, but Natural England will be supplying a shuttle bus from Station Road car park from 10:45 which will give you ample time to walk to the demonstration area.

Enjoy a tour as the Kelly Mine Preservation Association carries out their restoration work. An opportunity to discover more about Dartmoor’s mining history.

In 1260 Sir Henry De Tracey the first Lord of the Manor of Bovey Tracey, obtained a charter from King Henry III, to allow a weekly market and an annual fair. Dartmoor Arts Summer School Events Week 25-30 July
Drewsteignton. A week of evening events open to the public including artists talks, film screenings, discussion and live music at the Drewe Arms, Drewsteignton, Dartmoor. All welcome, no need to book, cost £5 per event on the door. The evenings are part of the Dartmoor Arts 2010 summer school.
The programme includes artists talks by Tim Knowles and Kate Davis, a talk by award winning architect Piers Taylor, music from Pavlov and the Devon based band The Jive Jacks and a film screening of new work by the 2010 Dartmoor Arts documentary film making students. The opening night event is the ever popular 'Desert Island Images' where a panel of castaway artists talk about their top eight artworks that have inspired them in their practice over the years.

14:00: 3hr Walk, Wayside Marker Stones on Dartmoor This joint walk with by the Dartmoor National Park and the Milestone Society, gives an introduction to the many wayside marker stones that survive on Dartmoor. The main guide is a Dartmoor National Park Guide, familiar with the mineral working on the moor. The local Milestone Society have selected a route that passes by striking wayside crosses, a selection of turnpike milestones and stone boundary markers around the parishes of Whitchurch and Sampford Spiney. During this circular walk we will see large medieval granite crosses and smaller engraved markers that defined the roads over the moor in the 19th century. We will walk along the tracks that were used to carry raw material off the moor and intrepid travellers safely to the markets on the edge of the moor. Start and finish at the Car Park on Whitchurch Down at NGR SX 497 733; off the UC road between Gate Cottage and Middlemoor village turn. Directions: Leave A386 at the Whitchurch turn and head NE through the village and up onto the Down (Golf Course). The car park is on open ground on the N side of the road.
