Path Orders Affecting Rights of Way

Once a Public Right of Way has been legally recorded on the Definitive Map  (external site, opens new window), it can only be diverted or closed by a legal public path order. A path order can divert an existing right of way or close it either temporarily or permanently. Orders can also be made to create new rights of way.

You can check below to see current and recent orders affecting rights of way in the National Park:

1. Temporary Closures

The County of Devon (Peter Tavy Footpath 49 and Mary Tavy (part of) Footpath 22) (Temporary Prohibition of Through Traffic)  Order 2008

Devon County Council has made an order, under section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, to prohibit all through traffic on:

This restriction is necessary because of the likelihood of danger to the public during engineering works by the Environment Agency.  The restriction will be in operation from 1 June 2008 for a maximum period of six months, or on completion of the works, whichever is the sooner.

For more information contact Andrew Watson, Principle Access and Ranger Officer, Dartmoor National Park Authority, Parke, Bovey Tracey, TQ13 9JQ; Telephone 01626 832093.

2. Diversions
A landowner can apply for a right of way to be diverted from its original route on to a new route.  After the Order is made, there is a period of time before it is confirmed, during which time members of the public may object to the diversion.
