Climate Change in the South West

The National Park Authority is a member of the South West Climate Change Impacts Partnership (SWCCIP) network and, working with others, we are looking at how we can adapt to the effects and opportunities resulting from climate change as well as considering how we can all work towards reducing Dartmoor’s contribution towards the causes of global warming.   In 2006 the Authority undertook an environmental audit, looking at how we can further improve our current working practices. Dartmoor National Park Authority has produced an exhibition on Climate Change, titled Climate Change: I can change the future..., the touring exhibition will be at the Dartmoor Gallery, High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown from 13 July - 10 October 2007. The exhibition will then be travelling to nine other venues around the south west of England in 2008.  This project was awarded grant funding from Defra's Climate Challenge Fund (external link, opens in new window).

Further information on the work of the SWCCIP can be found on the ‘Our South West’ website on the Climate Change and Sustainable Development weblinks page.   The internet is an enormous resource for advice on climate change.  There are many websites that offer the facts on climate change and tools to measure your household’s impact on it.  Some of the sites listed on the weblinks page give advice on minimising your impact on climate change; low energy appliances, insulation and renewable energy technology for the home, where to source it and specific funding that is available to reduce costs.

Sustainable Development

As part of the climate change agenda, the Authority is also looking at how it can encourage and promote sustainable development.  We are members of and actively supporting the Devon Sustainable Building Initiative, which promotes the pursuit of sustainable construction and energy technology within Devon. Further details can be found on the DSBI website (external link, opens in new window).

Both the Local Development Framework and the Management Plan for Dartmoor are under review and will include key policies to promote a sustainable future for Dartmoor and its communities.

The Dartmoor Sustainable Development Fund provides financial support for innovative sustainable development projects that help in the pursuit of National Park purposes.

Other Authority initiatives that support sustainable development include the Action for Wildlife project, the Moor Futures project, the Dartmoor Woodlands Strategy and sustainable tourism initiatives such as the Dartmoor Charter.
