The Regional Spatial Strategy
The Draft Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the South West 2006-2026 was produced by the South West Regional Assembly in 2006 and a widespread public consultation was held, which ended in August of that year. An electronic copy of the draft strategy can be accessed at the Regional Assembly website (external site, opens in new window).
The draft strategy was the subject of a public examination in front of an independent panel appointed by government between April and July 2007 and the Panel Report (external site, opens in new window) was published in December 2007.
As part of the final document, the RSS must include the numbers of new residential and transit pitches required for gypsy and traveller accommodation in each local planning authority throughout the region. In August 2007, the Regional Assembly published a consultation leaflet which forms an important part in establishing how many new pitches will be required in each part of the region up to the year 2011. A public examination was held in March 2008 to consider this and the Panel Report (external site, opens in new window) was published in April 2008.
It is expected the Government will publish its response to both reports in the summer of 2008. The publication of the final RSS is expected in the autumn of 2008.
