Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment

The Authority worked in partnership with Exeter City Council, East Devon, Mid Devon and Teignbridge District Councils and Devon County Council to prepare the Exeter & Torbay Housing Market Area Assessment (external link, opens in new window), which was published in July 2007, to consider housing needs across the sub-region over the next 20 years. We have continued to work with these partners to investigate ways in which housing needs might be met. Government guidance requires all local planning authorities in England to prepare Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessments (SHLAAs),(external site, opens new window) to identify land with the potential for new housing development. The partners have developed a methodology to enable each local authority to prepare its own SHLAA following a common approach. The Dartmoor SHLAA will help with preparation of the Development Management & Site Specific Policies Development Plan Document, one of the planning documents in the local development framework for Dartmoor National Park.

Anyone wishing to submit a site for consideration under the SHLAA process may do so by completing a form Word document icon (160kb) and sending it to the National Park Authority with an accompanying site map on an Ordnance Survey base.

Forms should be sent by e-mail to: forwardplanning@dartmoor-npa.gov.uk

Or by fax to: 01626 834684, or by surface mail to:

Phil Markham, Head of Service - Forward Planning and Community, Dartmoor National Park Authority, Parke, Bovey Tracey, NEWTON ABBOT, Devon, TQ13 9JQ.

A panel composed of representatives of the house building industry, the Dartmoor community and other relevant agencies will evaluate all the sites that are put forward for residential development.  The SHLAA will only be used to inform the preparation of the local development framework and the inclusion of a site in the final report does not necessarily mean that planning permission will be given or that the site will be allocated in a development plan document.

To be considered, forms should be submitted by 21 November 2008 at the latest.

The Devon Gypsy and Traveller Housing Needs Assessment 2006

The report of the Devon Gypsy and Traveller Housing Needs Assessment carried out in 2006 by the University of Plymouth on behalf of the Devon local authorities was published in January 2007. It was prepared in response to the Housing Act 2004 which requires local authorities to assess the accommodation needs of the gypsies and travellers as well as well as those of settled people.  Similar assessments are being carried out across the country and will advise regional and local planning policy.  The report and its recommendations can be accessed by clicking on the links below.
