Piles Copse SSSI (SX6462)

Image of Piles Copse

A small site which is one of the few surviving examples of the ancient high-level woodlands of Dartmoor. It stands on a steep west-facing slope within the valley of the River Erme. The stunted and gnarled Pedunculate Oaks are very slow-growing and the woodland is grazed so the ground flora is virtually absent. The trunks and branches of the trees support lichens and mosses, some of which are rare.
