Halstock Wood SSSI (SX6093)
This fine example of an upland Sessile Oakwood, on the northern edge of Dartmoor, supports a wide range of plants and birds. The wood lies on the east-facing slopes of the East Okement River and is dominated by Sessile Oak, which was previously coppiced. Pedunculate Oak and Ash are scattered throughout the wood and Alder grows on the river banks. Hazel dominates the understorey with some Holly and Guelder Rose. In the spring you can enjoy Bluebells and later Wood Anemone, Sanicle, Pignut, Common Cow-Wheat and Ramsons, all indicators of ancient woodland. At least 79 species of lichens have been recorded here, many on the bark of the trees. Birds found here include breeding Raven, Buzzard, Restart and Wood Warbler as well as one of the largest colonies of Pied Flycatcher in south west England. There is good riverside access via the Tarka Trail.
