Research, Survey and Monitoring

In order to look after Dartmoor’s wildlife, we have to know where it is and what it needs in order to survive.

We therefore carry out ecological surveys, undertake and support research and monitor both the species themselves and the effects of management on them.

Much of this work is undertaken in partnership with other organisations, often using joint funding.

Examples include survey and monitoring work for bog hoverfly and marsh fritillary butterflies, Vigur's eyebright, various species of bats, peat erosion in blanket bogs and the impact of pony grazing on Rhos pastures.

We also host a web page for the Dartmoor Biodiversity Research Group.

This group of academics and practising conservationists was set up by the Authority to bring together researchers and practitioners and stimulate multi-disciplinary research on Dartmoor.

t meets once a year with the meetings being organised by different partners in rotation. The web area has a list of members, and information about current and past research on Dartmoor.
