Biodiversity Projects
We run a number of special projects which are aimed at protecting and enhancing particular Dartmoor species and habitats. Many of these are partnership projects which use joint funding to achieve practical objectives.
Wealth of Wildlife – an eco-tourism project which aims to provide local businesses with information which they can use to promote the enjoyment of wildlife by their visitors.
Operation Wader – a joint project between the Dartmoor National Park Authority, Duchy of Cornwall, Ministry of Defence, RSPB, English Nature and Defra which aims to halt and reverse the decline in Dartmoor’s breeding curlew, lapwing, golden plover, dunlin and snipe.
Two Moors Threatened Butterfly Project (external site, opens new window)– a partnership project based on Dartmoor and Exmoor supported by Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park Authorities, Natural England, and Butterfly Conservation. This aims to survey and monitor high brown and marsh fritillary sites and work with landowners to ensure these areas are in the best condition for the future wellbeing of the butterflies. The Action for Wildlife Partnership carries out practical project work which contributes to targets for key habitats and species identified within Action for Wildlife: the Dartmoor Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). Barbastelle Bat Project: a partnership project by the Dartmoor National Park Authority, the Woodland Trust, the National Trust, with funding from the SITA Trust, which supported a PhD by Bristol University to investigate the ecology of the rare barbastelle bat. Woodland Bird Projects This includes Woodland bird survey 2008, Pied flycatcher nestbox scheme and Willow tit survey. | |
