Historic Farmstead Survey

This is a project concerned with identifying and recording Dartmoor’s traditional farmsteads. These are an emblematic resource and they are under pressure from changing farming practice and the economic need to make use of redundant farm buildings. A parish by parish survey has been in progress since 1992 and is about to be concluded at the end of this year. It is expected that details on about 700 farmsteads will have been collected spanning more than 30 parishes. Some of these surveys are held on a computer database whilst others are recorded in hard copy form.

A report on the nature and circumstances for this important aspect of our cultural heritage is due to be published towards the end of 2006.
