Prices

Up to 3 hours
1 guide (up to 25 in a group)£45
2 guides* (up to 50 in a group)£90
3 guides* (up to 75 in a group)£135

Individual groups are limited to 35 maximum in ground nesting bird season (1 March - 31 July), groups that are too large can be divided into separate parties.

The price is for the walk and so your teachers/ leaders are included in these total numbers. They must accompany the walk and will be responsible for the group’s behaviour and discipline.  The group leader remains ‘in loco parentis’ throughout the walk.

Parental Consent

Parental consent is an essential pre-requisite for any outdoor learning experience.  A pre-condition of our service is that all schools/ organisations have obtained consent for all participants signed by their parent(s)/ guardian(s).

Bookings and Payment

Please contact the Education Service (+441626831080) for further details; a minimum of six weeks notice is required.  Alternatively fill in an E-enquiry form or send us an email to education@dartmoor-npa.gov.uk.  Payment can be made by credit card, by cheque or by bank transfer. Payments by cheque must be drawn against a UK bank account.  Foreign group bookings are only accepted with payment in pounds sterling, we regret that Euros are not accepted. Confirmation and a receipt will be sent when a guide has been selected.  Payment cannot be made on the day.

Cancellations

There is a cancellation charge of £5 once the walk has been booked but if you cancel with less than 5 working days notice the whole fee will be forfeited.  If in doubt about the weather conditions on the day of the walk, telephone the guide (01626 831080 Monday-Friday or 01822 890414 on weekends) at least two hours before the starting time.  If bad weather prevents the walk taking place, an alternative date will be offered.

Period of Service

The service runs from 1 March to 31 October on any day of the week between 09:00 and 17:00, subject to guide availability.  Availability of guides cannot always be guaranteed.   Groups should arrive 15 minutes before the start time of the walk.  Failure to do so may result in the route being shortened or modified to keep within the period of hire.

Size of Group

Each group will be accompanied by one qualified DNP guide for every 25 children.  In addition, the group must include one adult leader for every 12 children.  Where more than one guide has been hired, it will be the responsibility of the hirer to ensure that groups are split into appropriate sizes and/or abilities prior to the start of the walk (on the advice of guides).

Clothing and Equipment

The ground is normally rough, wet and the vegetation prickly.  The weather is more extreme than in other parts of Devon and can deteriorate rapidly and unexpectedly.  Boots or wellingtons are strongly recommended as even sensible shoes are likely to get wet through.  Children will need to take at least three layers of clothing, the top one of which should be waterproof.  The teacher/group leader must ensure that every member of the group is properly equipped before arrival on Dartmoor.  A spare set of dry clothing for each pupil will make the journey back to your accommodation much more comfortable.

Dartmoor National Park Information Centre

There is the High Moorland Visitor Centre (Tel 01822 890414/ int. +44 1822 890414) at Princetown which is open daily between 10:00 to 17:00 through the peak season and 10:00 to 16:00 in the winter, the exceptions being Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing day and one week in March.  Groups planning to visit the centre must contact it in advance and on arrival at the centre they must split up into more manageable sizes.
