Supervision
The group leader or teacher must accompany the walk and will be responsible for the groups behaviour and discipline. The group leader remains ‘in loco parentis’ throughout the walk.
Parental Consent
Parental consent is an essential pre-requisite for any outdoor learning experience. A pre-condition of our service is that all schools/ organisations have obtained consent for all participants signed by their parent(s)/ guardian(s).
Size of Group
Each group will be accompanied by one H4 (mountain and moorland activities) qualified DNP guide for every 25 children. In addition, the group must include one adult leader for every 12 children.
Where a guided walk will take the group to a point from which the guide or adult leader will take more than half an hour to reach a means of transport or place of habitation (in order to raise an alarm), a minimum ratio of one H4 qualified guide for every 15 children will be applied. This is in accordance with guidelines published in ‘A Devon Approach to Outdoor Education’.
Where more than one guide has been hired, it will be the responsibility of the hirer to ensure that groups are split into appropriate sizes and/or abilities prior to the start of the walk (on the advice of guides).
Clothing and Equipment
The ground is normally rough, wet and the vegetation prickly. The weather is more extreme than in other parts of Devon and can deteriorate rapidly and unexpectedly. Boots or wellingtons are strongly recommended as even sensible shoes are likely to get wet through. Children will need to take at least three layers of clothing, the top one of which should be waterproof. A spare set of dry clothing for each pupil can make the journey back to school much more comfortable.
The teacher or group leader must ensure that every member of the group is properly equipped before arrival on Dartmoor.
Dogs
Unfortunately dogs (other than registered guide dogs) cannot be allowed in view of the potential hazard to livestock.
Transport
We recommend the use of minibuses rather than coaches wherever possible. Their size allows for a greater degree of flexibility when choosing walk start points.
Coaches on narrow roads and bridges frequently experience difficulty. They therefore restrict the number of suitable walk start points. Dartmoor has a recommended coach route network (a copy is available on request). We must ask that you plan your visit and start points with this in mind.
If a linear route is requested then sufficient time should be allowed at the end of the walk to return the guide(s) to their vehicle.
Cancellations
There is a cancellation charge of £5 once the walk has been booked but if you cancel with less than 5 working days notice the whole fee will be forfeited. If in doubt about the weather conditions on the day of the walk, telephone the guide (01626 831080 Monday-Friday or 01822 890414 on weekends) at least two hours before the starting time. If bad weather prevents the walk taking place, an alternative date will be offered.
High Moorland Visitor Centre
Groups planning to visit the High Moorland Visitor Centre (Tel 01822 890414) must contact it in advance to book.
