Volunteers

The Warden/ Ranger Service has operated a voluntary warden scheme for approximately 40 years and there are currently 40 wardens, assigned to local Sector Rangers, working in the National Park.
Voluntary wardens assist the Rangers with their duties and provide an extra element of liaison with the community in the area to which they are assigned. They advise and assist visitors to the National Park, help promote quiet enjoyment and understanding of Dartmoor’s special qualities and carry out occasional practical projects. Their work is often specific to the requirements of their particular Sector.
The day to day management of the scheme is delegated to a Senior Ranger, who identifies training needs, produces a regular newsletter and organises an Annual General Meeting. The voluntary warden scheme is currently fully staffed and vacancies are normally advertised in local parish newsletters. Dartmoor National Park benefits from the practical contributions of many other groups, achieving conservation and land management objectives with the help of volunteer workers. | ![]() |
