National Park Ranger Job Description
Job purpose
To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of Dartmoor, through undertaking research, survey and monitoring, ensuring law enforcement, managing recreational sites and implementing practical conservation work; and to promote the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of Dartmoor, through providing information, knowledge and advice to visitors, managing recreational activities and assisting emergency services as required. In pursuing these purposes, to seek to foster the social and economic well being of the local community through maintaining close liaison with local individuals and communities, and the range of interest and user groups and providing effective communication between the NPA and the public.
Principal duties
Research, survey and monitoring
To
assist in the collection and analysis of data (eg recreation and erosion research and monitoring; visitor,
activity and wildlife surveys; management agreement and landscape change monitoring).
Law
enforcement
To inform, explain and where necessary enforce the common and access
land byelaws.
Managing recreational sites
and pressures
To organise and undertake patrols of common and access land, to control
and manage organised recreational events, to seek to resolve conflicts among recreational users and
between these and other land users (through on site traffic and visitor management measures); and to
negotiate access and rights of way improvements.
Practical
conservation work
To undertake, or arrange for, the signing, waymarking and maintenance
of public rights of way, other access and related field furniture; to carry out, monitor and regularly
maintain erosion repair and site management works; to arrange for the collection and removal of litter;
and to organise and supervise contractors and volunteers engaged on such work.
Providing
information, knowledge and advice
To develop and maintain a knowledge of Dartmoor
sufficient to inform and advise visitors and residents; to contribute to guided walks and talks programmes;
to represent the NPA at events and shows; to work with local schoolchildren; and to support local Information
Centres and Village Information Points.
Assisting
the emergency services
To maintain regular liaison and close working relations
with the police service and to provide emergency assistance to emergency services as requested.
Voluntary
Wardens and other assistance
To recruit and manage Voluntary Wardens, to manage
temporary staff allocated to the post and to supervise Duke of Edinburgh Award service placements.
Maintaining
liaison
To maintain close contacts with Parish Councils and community groups; land-owning,
land-managing and business interests (particularly those related to recreation and tourism); local recreation
user groups; and with all NPA specialist staff, permitting an effective two way flow of knowledge and
information.
