The four parishes contained within this Sector share a similar geography. From the highest point (481 metres) at Petre’s Cross on Western Whitebarrow to the lowest (82 metres) at Moor Cross, Cornwood, the landscape is gently south facing, giving wonderful views towards the South Hams and the sea beyond. The commons, which are especially rich in archaeological features are intersected by the major river valleys of the Yealm, Erme and Avon. The lower slopes of the commons join a typical westcountry landscape of small fields, bounded by Devon hedges and drystone walls. Some interesting areas of woodland, particularly in the deep river valleys, support a wide variety of birds, mammals and plants.
