Countryside Management 1
Sensitive management is essential to achieving the purposes for which the National Parks were established and a great many bodies and individuals including landowners and farmers play a vital role in maintaining this balance. The Dartmoor National Park Authority Ranger Service is an important element in this process, working alone or with specialist Officers from the National Park Authority, in partnerships with landowners and commoners, with local communities, schools or with volunteer groups. The maintenance of good communications is a vital and the Service is responsive to matters raised by residents and local groups. Rangers assist in providing advice to the visiting public and in monitoring visitor pressure. They also represent the Authority at local public events. | ![]() |
The Ranger Service works to prevent inappropriate behaviour such as illegal camping, the lighting of fires, damage to the land, blocking of water supplies and the feeding of ponies by the public. Rangers also work to raise awareness of animal protection issues, carrying out specific programmes of work during the spring when young livestock are particularly vulnerable.
Surveying and maintaining public rights of way including the repair of damaged stiles and gates and the provision of new gates, signs and stiles to enable appropriate use of new access land is a major area of work.
