Specific Guidelines on Grants for the Repair of Historic Buildings and Structures

Eligible Property
Any building or structure within the National Park and/or in a conservation area which is either included in the Lists of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest, or is considered by the Dartmoor National Park Authority (NPA) to be a building or structure of local historic or architectural interest.  However, priority will be given to listed buildings on the Authority's At Risk Register.

Eligible Work
Eligible for grant aid will be structural repairs, (as distinct from improvements or maintenance) to historic fabric and towards. re-thatching &  re-cladding, structural repairs.
Work completed or begun before an application has been decided is not eligable.

Level of Grant
The maximum level of grant aid will usually be £1,500 or 25% (whichever is the less), but exceptionally, some buildings or circumstances may merit a higher grant.  Listed buildings which appear on the NPA's Buildings at Risk Register may fall into this category.

Materials and Techniques
In addition to the standard terms and conditions, the NPA will require prior approval of certain materials and the use of certain techniques and the following conditions will also apply:

a) use of plain flush ridges on thatched roofs;
(b) use of a traditional lime mortar in render and pointing;
(c) use of softwood or native hardwood for replacement doors and windows;
(d) employment of historically appropriate finishes;
(e) use of British natural slates.
(f) fixing of slates by nailing or pegs, rather than clipping.

Additional conditions may be placed on specific offers of grant.

Thatching

In order to support and encourage the use of material traditional to Dartmoor a grant will normally only be available for re-thatching in combed wheat reed.  Only major work can be considered for grant aid and this normally mean the renewal of the thatch on at least one full roof slope.

Applicants should provide a detailed specification of works and a minimum of two estimates
