Published by the Dartmoor National Park Authority and English Nature in 1997 with a second edition in 2001, The Nature of Dartmoor describes and evaluates the wildlife and geology of the Dartmoor Natural Area and proposes key objectives for nature conservation and earth sciences. These are taken forward with the addition of targets and action plans in Action for Wildlife: The Dartmoor Biodiversity Action Plan which was published in 2001 as a linked document. This publication is available for purchase from our on-line shop.

The word ‘archaeology’, in its purest sense, means the study of the material remains of our past, although we now commonly use the term to refer to the visible remains in the landscape. The archaeology of Dartmoor is very special. Within today’s wild moorland landscapes, dominated by heather and moorland grasses, can be found extensive remains of past human activity – much now reclaimed by nature. This publication is available for purchase from our on-line shop.
