Retirement of Dr Nick Atkinson, Chief Executive (National Park Officer), Dartmoor National Park Authority

After more than 33 years service with Dartmoor National Park Authority, with over 16 years as Chief Executive (National Park Officer), Dr Nick Atkinson has announced his forthcoming retirement in September 2007.

The Authority is now seeking a new Chief Executive to work for and in one of Britain’s most stunning protected landscapes.

Nigel Hoskin, Chairman, Dartmoor National Park Authority, said:

‘Under the leadership of Nick Atkinson the Authority has gained a deserved reputation for on the ground delivery and for its strength of partnership working. The vacancy arising from his forthcoming retirement is an exciting and challenging opportunity to lead the Dartmoor National Park Authority and to continue to build on, develop and drive forward strategic plans and maximise our impact at local, regional and national levels.

A new Dartmoor National Park Management Plan, which will help focus the direction for Dartmoor over the next 20 years, will be in place for autumn 2007. This will provide new impetus for achieving the National Park purposes of conserving and enhancing the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area and promoting opportunities for understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the National Park. Equally challenging will be the duty to seek to foster the economic and social well-being of local communities within the National Park.’

An application pack is available from South West Provincial Employers, Dennett House, 11 Middle Street, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 1SH. Tel (01823) 270101.

Notes for Editors

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland.  They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment.  However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers.  Over 33,500 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
