Government boost for Dartmoor and the National Park Authority

Defra has announced that Dartmoor National Park Authority will receive £4.72 million in National Park Grant next year. This is the Authority’s share of the £46.2 million that will be allocated to English National Parks for 2008-09 – an increase of 4.2 per cent over the 2007-08 Grant. The announcement also gives a three year horizon for national park funding – the Grant is expected to increase by 2.9% in 2009/10 and 2.75% in 2010/11.

The Grant maintains the existing level of Government support at a time when there were concerns that there might be a reduction because of the pressures on Defra’s budget.

Nigel Hoskin, Chairman of the Dartmoor National Park Authority, said:

‘I would like to thank the Minister, Jonathan Shaw, for supporting the cause of national parks with his fellow Ministers, in what we know has been a difficult spending round for Defra. This is a good announcement for Dartmoor and a tremendous fillip to the management of this internationally important landscape. It has been announced at an opportune time as we are just about to launch the new Management Plan for Dartmoor National Park and the funding will help us to tackle the significant challenges we face: climate change, the future of upland farming, sustaining our communities and providing opportunities for all people to enjoy the National Park.’

In addition, £200,000 has been allocated for continuing the Dartmoor Sustainable Development Fund in each of the coming three years. This Fund is used to promote and encourage a range of innovative projects that aim to turn the rhetoric of sustainable development into everyday reality. It has been used to finance a range of projects on Dartmoor: from micro generation, school recycling and composting facilities, to production of biodiesel, a car pool scheme and environmental arts.

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland. They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment.  However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers.  Over 33,500 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
