Dartmoor National Park Authority ready for the new season
To help you discover the best opportunities for enjoying a day out, or a perfect holiday on Dartmoor, Dartmoor National Park Authority has just published the free Dartmoor Guide 2008-2009: Information for visitors and residents. The Guide is full of interesting articles which will appeal to Dartmoor residents and visitors alike. This year the Guide has a special focus on Dartmoor’s farming, highlighting the importance of farming in the maintenance of this special landscape and its communities. The Guide also contains a What’s On Dartmoor supplement, listing hundreds of local events and National Park Authority guided walks for you to enjoy throughout the spring and summer 2008. The new Dartmoor Guide is available at local Tourist Information Centres, libraries, and from Dartmoor National Park Authority’s High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown, open daily throughout the year (telephone 01822 890414). | ![]() |
The guided walks and events programme is also available online at www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk, click on Visiting. Copies of the Guide are also available from Dartmoor National Park Authority Information Centres at Postbridge, Haytor and Newbridge.

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland. They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment. However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers. Over 33,400 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.

Notes for Editors
Haytor public toilets: temporary closure March 25 – 14 April 2008
As part of the Dartmoor National Park Authority’s project to improve information and toilet facilities at Haytor on the B3387, the existing toilet block is due to be de-commissioned on 25 March 2008 followed by its demolition.
It is hoped that the public toilets being provided in the new building here will be open from 14 April. The new Information Centre is planned to open on Friday 23 May.
This means that from 25 March – 13 April inclusive there will be no public toilet facilities at Haytor. The Authority apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. A temporary toilet facility has been carefully considered by the Authority but this was deemed inappropriate on practical and cost grounds and also for security reasons.
These planned dates may be subject to change. For the latest information on the public toilets closure period, and the phased opening of the new toilets and Information Centre, please phone the Authority's High Moorland Visitor Centre 01822 890414 or view on-line at www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk
The nearest public toilets are at:
Widecombe-in-the-Moor, village car park. Open daily. (Distance from Haytor: approx 3.3 miles; 5.4 km)
Bovey Tracey, town car park, Station Road. Open daily. (Distance from Haytor: approx 3.3 miles; 5.4 km)
