Dartmoor National Park Authority
Chairman and Deputy Chairman re-elected
At the meeting of the Dartmoor National Park Authority on Friday 2 June Nigel Hoskin, a Secretary of State appointee to the Authority since 2002, was re-elected as its Chairman for the coming year.
Nigel Hoskin, Chairman, Dartmoor National Park Authority | Following his re-election, Nigel who lives in Dousland, paid tribute to the Dartmoor National Park Authority officers and staff who, he said, have worked with great professionalism, diligence and dedication in the face of a busy workload, through a period of organisational change and external scrutiny. He recognised the substantial contribution of the Deputy Chairman, Maurice Retallick, also re-elected at the meeting, and all of the Authority’s Members who had been generous with their time and expertise. |
Looking ahead, Nigel highlighted the Authority’s priority objectives for conservation, access, the local community and organisational efficiency contained in the new Corporate Plan. He reflected with optimism on the Management Plan review begun in April and involving partners, stakeholders and residents in future plans and objectives for the National Park. The Authority remained committed to meeting the emerging needs of Dartmoor in a changing world. ‘I am delighted’ Nigel said ‘to have been re-elected and look forward to another demanding but extremely satisfying year, which everyone associated with the Authority, can approach with confidence and enthusiasm.’ |

Notes for Editors
Nigel Hoskin was born in Torquay. He joined the Royal Navy in 1963, and served for 30 years before embarking on a second career in Local Government and Further Education in Devon, specialising in the democratic process and corporate governance. A keen walker on Dartmoor since childhood, in retirement he developed an interest in a variety of conservation projects on the moor including the building and repair of dry stone walls and Devon banks. Nigel Hoskin and his wife have lived in Dousland within the Park for 20 years and share a passion for Dartmoor and its communities. He joined the National Park Authority as a Secretary of State national appointee in 2003 and was elected Chairman in June 2005.
Nigel Hoskin serves on the Authority’s Development Control Committee, the Edward Morshead Award Judging Panel, the Dartmoor Steering Group, the Park Management Working Panel and the Planning and Sustainable Development Working Panel
Maurice Retallick is a Dartmoor farmer and Secretary of State appointee. His farm lies in the parish of Ilsington and he serves on the National Park Authority’s Development Control Committee, Teignbridge Community Planning Forum, the Park Management Working Panel, the Planning and Sustainable Development Working Panel, the Edward Morshead Award Judging Panel and the Dartmoor Steering Group.
The National Park Authority comprises 26 Members. Seven Members are appointed by Devon County Council (external link, opens new window), and seven by the District Councils (three from West Devon Borough Council (external link, opens new window), three from Teignbridge District Council (external link, opens new window) and one from South Hams District Council (external link, opens new window)). Twelve Members are Government appointees, five of whom represent parish council interests. The other seven Government appointees are persons, usually local, with specialist knowledge of, or a particular interest in, the National Park. They are appointed for a three year period and help provide the balance of local and national interests that is essential to the management of a National Park. Advice on how individuals can be nominated for appointment by the Secretary of State is available from the Chief Executive (National Park Officer).
In appointing members to the National Park Authority, constituent Councils must pay regard to the desirability of appointing members who represent wards situated wholly or partly within the National Park.
National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland. They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment. However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers. Over 33,500 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year
