See Moor on display at the High Moorland Visitor Centre
An exciting new exhibition is being hosted by Dartmoor National Park Authority’s High Moorland Visitor Centre in Princetown. The exhibition, entitled Moor, is on display from Friday 24 November 2006 to 10 January 2007 and is the culmination of twelve months work by Somerset artists Pennie Elfick and Jenny Graham.
The artists have been exploring Dartmoor for the past year, gathering visual information about the moor and its environs for the exhibition. The artists have aimed for an exhibition that would convey two very different approaches to the same subject matter. Jenny is a figurative landscape painter, whose work is based on the comparison between the agricultural field patterns and the ‘wildness’ of the moor; Pennie is an abstract painter, whose work is informed by the transient nature of the light in the landscape.
During their time spent on Dartmoor both artists experienced many different aspects of seasonal weather, from waking up on a February morning to find a brilliant blue sky and a covering of beautiful white snow to being completely mist bound! The speed with which the weather changed was one of the most fascinating aspects of their visits. The challenge for both artists was to capture those fleeting moments and use the visual information to create paintings and prints that reflect the variety in the landscape and the constant and subtle changes in the light that plays across it.
The exhibition shows the paintings and prints that were made in the artists' studios during the last year. The exhibition will also include a CD Rom based on their sketchbooks and site photography of the areas visited. Moor will be on tour in the South West during 2007
The High Moorland Visitor Centre is open daily 10 am – 4 pm, admission free.

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland. They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment. However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers. Over 33,400 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
