Dartmoor landscapes by Lucy Evans

Visitors to Dartmoor National Park Authority’s High Moorland Visitor Centre can experience something of the rugged beauty of the Dartmoor landscape throughout the seasons, and in all weather conditions, through a new exhibition of traditional oil paintings by Lucy Evans.

Lucy is largely self taught and has painted for 12 years.

She lives mainly in Bath but her haven and base for her painting expeditions onto the Moor is a small sheep farm, run by her sister on the western edge of Dartmoor.

Lucy spends many hours, often over several days, huddled in enormous layers of clothing, hat pulled down against threatening rain, attempting to steady an easel against the buffeting wind in order to capture the essence of Dartmoor on canvas.

The accuracy of colour in her work and her ability to capture the changing moods of the Moor helps to transport the viewer into the landscape, making her paintings popular with all who have an interest in this special place.

The exhibition runs from 18 January to 2 March 2008.  The High Moorland Visitor Centre is open daily, 10 am – 4 pm.  Princetown is accessible by public transport.  For timetable enquiries please telephone Traveline on 0871 200 22 33.

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland.  They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment.  However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers.  Over 33,400 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
