Climate Change

I can change the future

Climate Change:I can change the future

Come along to Dartmoor National Park Authority’s High Moorland Visitor Centre in Princetown and discover the facts behind current climate change predictions, how climate change will impact on all our lives and what we can all do to help tackle this global issue locally.

Dartmoor National Park Authority has organised a major new exhibition for all the family, with interactive games for children, recycled art, activities and events.

Helen Jenny Deputy Chair and climate change lead Member, Dartmoor National Park Authority, said:

‘Everywhere will be affected by climate change and that includes Dartmoor. We cannot ignore the issues and as lead Member for Dartmoor National Park Authority on climate change I have been involved in a programme of activities, for National Park Authority Members and staff, which have contributed to this exhibition.  The challenges and opportunities presented by climate change are exciting as well as daunting.  The exhibition deals with the global problem at a local level.  Hopefully, those who visit will leave inspired to do 'their bit' and feel confident that Dartmoor National Park Authority is committed to support Dartmoor and its communities to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Together we can change the future!’

The exhibition provides detailed information on the issues and potential impacts of climate change, globally, nationally, in the south west of England and on Dartmoor, and also enables children to learn about the issues through play.  While adults take time to absorb the information, children can log on to Dartmoor National Park Authority’s great new interactive game - Change Your World – and have fun while learning about climate change and how to do something positive to change the future.   A Change Your World Activity Fun booklet and a large Change Your World wooden jigsaw have been developed by the National Park Authority for younger children and will also be part of the exhibition.

The exhibition contains work on display by five local schools (Princetown, Landscove, Bovey Tracey, South Tawton and Dunsford) who have studied the impact of climate change on the environment and communities of Dartmoor, with Dartmoor National Park Authority’s education service.  The National Park Authority has also organised a series of special guided walks and events and an opportunity to pledge to do your bit for our planet.  Visit Climate Change: I can change the future this summer and help change your world – if you have access to the internet why not visit the exhibition online - or check it out at a venue near you.

Princetown is accessible by public transport.  For public transport information telephone Traveline on 0870 608 2 608.

The exhibition will be on display at the High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown and online at www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk from 13 July 2007.  The exhibition will be at the High Moorland Visitor Centre until 10 October 2007 and will then be on tour, visiting venues around the south west of England in 2008 and 2009:

Notes for Editors

Corporate priorities

Dartmoor National Park Authority has made climate change a corporate priority and actions by the Authority through partnership working and raising public awareness are identified in the Authority’s Corporate Plan 2007-2010.

The Draft Dartmoor National Park Managaement Plan 2007-2012 identifies key principles which have been developed as a set of guiding ideals to which all relevant partners and stakeholders can sign up.  The plan states that: ‘All decisions that affect Dartmoor will consider the implications of climate change -  seeking to minimize the output of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases and make every effort to mitigate or adapt to the effects of climate change in ways that conserve and enhance Dartmoor’s special qualities.’

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland. They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment.  However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers.  Over 33,500 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
