Dartmoor continues to WoW visitors
Following on from the success of Dartmoor National Park Authority’s Wealth of Wildlife (WoW) project, all those involved were invited to attend a spring “get-together” event at Dartmoor National Park Authority headquarters, at Parke, earlier this month. The project initially provided Dartmoor tourism businesses with tailor-made wildlife folders, enabling them to promote understanding of Dartmoor’s wildlife to their guests.
The event, attended by Dartmoor tourism representatives, was organised by the National Park Authority, to investigate further ideas to promote Dartmoor as a year round destination to visitors with an interest in wildlife and the environment.
These ideas were developed further in a presentation given by Marketing Consultant, Margaret Hiles. Other guest speakers included Shane Harris from the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, who talked about ‘Wake up to Wildlife’, a similar project carried out in his area, and Peter Exley, from the RSPB, who gave a very entertaining talk about the stories and folklore associated with the birds found on Dartmoor – providing interesting snippets for accommodation providers to pass on to their guests.
The event also provided a networking opportunity for Dartmoor tourism business proprietors, such as visitor attractions and accommodation providers, and feedback has provided some positive ideas which can be developed further over the coming months.

Notes for Editors
The Wealth of Wildlife project was funded by Dartmoor National Park Authority to raise awareness and encourage the enjoyment of wildlife by visitors to Dartmoor.
Phase I provided folders for 25 accommodation providers.
Phase 2 expanded the project to include wildlife information provision for non-accommodation providers, and included visitor attractions and activity providers. It also developed the creation of wildlife trails within the grounds of certain establishments and provided wildlife identification training days for the businesses and guided walk leaders.
National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England and Wales and are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment. However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers. Over 33,000 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
