Mark Abdey - Painting Dartmoor

Dartmoor National Park Authority’s High Moorland Visitor Centre in Princetown is the venue for a stunning new exhibition of Dartmoor paintings by westcountry artist Mark Abdey.  Mark has been painting professionally for the past five years, producing small beautifully rendered watercolours of moorland and coastal scenes.

Dartmoor has held a special place in Mark’s heart since a family holiday, when he was ten years old.  He moved to the region nine years ago, from rural Berkshire.

This, his thirteenth regional exhibition, sees a dramatic change of style and medium.  Gone are the highly detailed watercolours, to be replaced by vigorously painted oils on a far larger scale.  The aim is to strip away the detail and reduce the scene to its basic elements.

The open spaces and vast skies of the high moor, with its rapidly changing weather and light, provide the primary source of inspiration for this exhibition.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 12 March to Wednesday 27 April 2005.  The High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown is open daily, 10 am to 4 pm, until 19 March, from which date the Centre will open from 10 am to 5 pm daily.

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland.  They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment.  However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers.  Over 33,400 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
