Dartmoor’s Heritage Open Days:
There’s Moor to stay for
Celebrate Dartmoor’s rich cultural heritage during a special weekend of events and activities, taking place from Friday 9 – Sunday 11 September 2005.
The weekend, organised by Dartmoor National Park Authority, is part of Heritage Open Days, a national celebration of cultural heritage promoted by the Civic Trust in association with English Heritage.
Find out about 4,000 years of human activity in Hawns and Dendles wood, during a fascinating walk, visiting prehistoric and medieval settlements, and even the remains of an Edwardian ornamental garden, known as Dr Fox’s garden, after its creator. Free admission, but booking essential, telephone (01822) 890414
Enjoy a chance to visit the Grade1 listed medieval Dartmoor longhouse at Higher Uppacott, owned by the Dartmoor National Park Authority. Learn what life was like during the medieval past and listen to accounts of life there during the first half of the 20th century, recorded by the Authority’s Moor Memories oral history project. Free admission but booking essential, telephone (01822) 890414.
If industrial remains are more your thing, then join us in an investigation of south Devon’s biggest 19th century copper mine. Free admission but booking is essential, telephone (01822) 890414.
Dartmoor National Park Authority is also contributing to a series of events, organised by the Military, at Okehampton Battle Camp, on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September. Events will include special tours, demonstrations and displays, including a collection of WWII military vehicles. There will be an audio-visual presentation, from Dartmoor National Park Authority’s Moor Memories oral history project, on how Dartmoor life was affected by WWII, and a guided walk led by a National Park Guide and a member of the military staff from the Camp. Free admission.
There is so much to see and do - why not make the most of your visit and plan to stay overnight. Dartmoor offers a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.
For a full list of events and activities taking place over the weekend visit www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk. or telephone Dartmoor National Park Authority’s High Moorland Visitor Centre on (01822) 890414. To find out about Heritage Open Days, taking place nationally, visit www.heritageopendays.org.

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland. They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment. However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers. Over 33,000 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
