The autumn and winter Dartmoor Visitor

The autumn/winter edition of Dartmoor National Park Authority’s free information paper the Dartmoor Visitor has been published.  Containing a wealth of information and opportunities to enjoy the uplifting beauty of Dartmoor, the Dartmoor Visitor is popular with regular visitors to Dartmoor and local residents, and it’s a must for the first time visitor to the National Park.

The Dartmoor Visitor contains a comprehensive guided walks programme, led by the Dartmoor National Park Authority Guide Service, National Park Rangers and specialist staff.  From wooded valleys to the high moorland of northern Dartmoor, the walks cater for a wide range of abilities and interests, with special activities for children and families during the half term and Christmas holiday periods.  And remember, Dartmoor National Park Authority’s guided walks are free to those who arrive by public transport; just show your ticket to the guide.  Public transport information is available by telephoning traveline on 0870 608 2 608.

There is also a programme of informative illustrated talks, given by National Park Guides, at the High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown, and a variety of local events taking pace throughout the National Park during the autumn and winter.

To obtain a copy of the Dartmoor Visitor, telephone the High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown, on (01822) 890414.  Copies are also available from National Park Authority Information Centres.  The Dartmoor National Park Authority guided walks and events programme is also available on the Authority’s website www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk

Dartmoor National Park Authority Information Centres will operate their winter opening times from the beginning of November.  The High Moorland Visitor Centre, Princetown, will be open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm.   Information Centres at Postbridge, Newbridge and Haytor will be open at weekends only, 10am to 4pm, through to the New Year.

National Parks cover 10% of the land area of England, Wales and Scotland.  They are of special value to the whole nation because of their great beauty, their wildlife and cultural interests and the opportunities they offer for quiet enjoyment.  However, they are not nationally owned - the land is in the hands of many landowners or occupiers including farmers.  Over 33,000 people live inside the Dartmoor National Park and many millions of visits are made to it each year.
