Woodfair comes to town
The biggest foresters’ market in the south west is coming to Plymouth City Centre on Saturday 22 March. Woodfair South West is bringing the wonderful world of wood into the heart of the city this Easter. There will everything from chainsaw carvers to wood chippers and bushcraft workshops to nest box building.
Woodfair South West was set up in 2006 to support the many varied businesses and organisations that work with wood across the region. While the organisation’s flagship event, the Roadford Summer Woodfair, takes place again in July it also hosts a series of other high-profile, wood-related events throughout the year. Last September’s successful ‘Building with Wood’ conference at Exeter University attracted nearly 150 delegates who heard from experts from all over the UK and Europe about the resurgence and the opportunities associated with timber in sustainable construction.
Woodfair South West will be raising the profile of wood to a new ‘city’ audience in Plymouth, using wood chippers and chainsaws to draw the crowds away from the high-street shops to its Foresters’ Market in the city centre. Part-funded by the Forestry Commission, the Exmoor National Park Authority and the South West Regional Development Agency’s Woodland Renaissance initiative, it hopes to leave audiences fired up with a greater understanding of how wood burners and boilers are the fuel of the future.
There will be a whole host of other exhibits and demonstrations at the event:
Mountain bikers will be showing how you can get your kicks from the woods while the less adventurous might be happier hearing about the guided tree walks in and around Plymouth. Reconnect yourself with the past and admire the skills of the furniture maker and take home some of the finest natural crafts and products in the south west.
Woodfair South West has teamed up with the Dartmoor National Park Authority and BBC Breathing Places to encourage you to get out and DO something. Come along to the Plymouth Woodfair and sign up for some tree planting, a walk in the ancient woods of Dartmoor or a chance to turn your hand at a traditional craft. We promise to help you see the wood from the trees.
