Friends of the Earth Director to speak on climate change in Chagford
Tony Juniper, Executive Director of Friends of the Earth, will be speaking in Chagford in February about climate change.
The talk has been organised by local environment charity Westden and the Devon Association for Renewable Energy (DARE) as part of their work to raise awareness among people in West Devon about the challenge of climate change.
Mr Juniper will be speaking at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 20 February at the Jubilee Hall, Chagford. The title of his talk will be: 'Climate Change: taking action in time' Tickets are free but must be booked in advance from Westden.
The talk will be introduced by Westden Director Anna Kennedy and a short film on climate change will be shown. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session and refreshments.
Anna Kennedy said:
' We are very excited to have such a high profile speaker to help us publicise this urgent issue. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our world today and it is vital that we understand the causes of the problem, how it is likely to affect us, and what we need to do urgently to help tackle it in our own lives.'
'The main human cause of climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Carbon dioxide is mainly emitted through burning coal, oil and gas for energy, electricity and transport. Climate change is a huge challenge for governments, business and individuals but can also mean a lot of new opportunities if we are willing to take action.'
Tony Juniper has been an environmental campaigner for nearly twenty years. Since 2003 he has been the Executive Director of Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland and from 2000 he has been the Vice Chair of Friends of the Earth International. He has worked with Friends of the Earth since 1990 and played a prominent role in many of its most high-profile campaigns.
Westden has been funded by Defra to help communicate the challenge of climate change through a series of talks throughout West Devon, through radio adverts and debates, articles in the local press and community magazines, and through a free-to-enter climate change competition on the Westden website: www.westden.co.uk (external link, opens new window).
We will also be working with the Wharf Cinema in Tavistock to show the climate change film An Inconvenient Truth by former US Presidential contender Al Gore. There will be a special Westden showing of the film on the evening of 8pm on Sunday 4 March and the film will also be shown at other times over the following week until the evening of Thursday 8 March. Tickets will be available from Westden or the Wharf box office on: 01822 611166 and further information can be found at www.tavistockwharf.com (external link, opens new window).
