Power Less - Energy Week

Ivybridge and District, 22 - 27 September 2008

Save Money, Save Energy, Save The Planet

Positive living combats soaring energy costs

Worried about rising energy prices and how to keep warm this Winter?  Wondering how your home or your business could save energy, reduce your carbon footprint and save money at the same time?  In response to these and other urgent related questions, the Ivybridge-based PL:21 group in association with the Ivybridge Environment Action Group (IEAG) is staging an energy conservation week.

The intention is to help enable residents and businesses in Ivybridge and the surrounding towns and villages to learn about and benefit from the opportunities arising from the growing national and international focus on energy and sustainability.  This includes practical and often inexpensive steps to save energy and cut costs in our daily lives.

The week runs from 22 - 27 September 2008.  It will raise awareness of the key issues around energy security, urging us all to ‘Power Less’ and so become more resilient to any further hikes in fuel prices.

The main aims of the Energy Week are:

Dartmoor National Park Authority's exhibition Climate Change ... I can change the future sets the tone for the week.  This runs from Monday 22 – Friday 26 September at Ivybridge's new Watermark (external link, opens new window) building.

It is becoming increasingly clear that we all have an inconvenient truth to face with the rise of climate change and the declining availability of oil and gas supplies. A perspective on the realities of this are   explored in the film An Inconvenient Truth, which is being screened at The Watermark's cinema on Tuesday 23 September at 7.30 pm.

Also at the Watermark on Wednesday 24 September, starting at 6.00 pm with a finger buffet, is a talk from an Envision Business mentor, followed by the opportunity to talk to a low energy lighting specialist and other local businesses about their energy saving experiences.

The week ends on a high note on Saturday 27 September in the new community hall at Ivybridge Methodist Church, when the well known scientist and broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis officially opens Ivybridge and District's first ‘Energy Fair’.  This is designed to help all local residents combat the rise in fuel prices.  There will be talks on energy efficiency and renewable energy systems, including solar water heating, small wind turbines and biomass, as well as a talk on the effects of climate change on Dartmoor.  You will be able to pop in a look around the stalls, chat to some experts and pick up a couple of free energy saving light bulbs.

Ivybridge resident Sophie Phillips, who is coordinating the Energy Week on behalf of PL:21, said:

“I am really excited about the Energy Week.  There is a great programme of speakers at all the events.  We are all concerned about rising energy bills.  I hope local people will benefit from coming to these events: either signing up for insulation schemes, learning more about climate change, finding out about different renewable energy systems for their homes or low energy lighting for their business.  We think we have something for everyone!”

PL:21 is a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers and is reliant on donations in order for it to exist.  Therefore a suggested minimum donation of £2 per person (concessions £1, children and young people under 16 free) is asked for at each event.
