Meat Dartmoor in Greenwich Market
A flavour of Dartmoor and Widecombe Fair will arrive at Greenwich on 3 and 4 June. A group of traditional Dartmoor hill farmers are coming to Greenwich market each weekend to bring their home reared Beef and Lamb to a wider audience.
Each of the ‘Meat Dartmoor’ group retail their own beef and/or lamb, reared on the West Country’s most rugged and beautiful landscapes. To survive the pressures on farm incomes, they have jointly taken a pitch at this popular and growing London market.
Anton Coaker, Meat Dartmoor farmer said:
‘As well as meeting existing customers who’ve bought while on holiday on Dartmoor, we will now be able to present our extensively reared beef and lamb direct to a fresh market. The project will give urban based shoppers a chance to talk directly to the stockmen who’ve tended these animals.’
Members (in rotation) will make the journey directly from Devon, to man a stall, through Saturday and Sunday, with their own fresh produce. Although the group came together to co-operate in marketing, they remain individual family businesses, and customers will be able to compare, week by week, the taste and texture of meat from various traditional breeds, raised on different farms.
